Jamie Smith and Josh Tongue impress as England Lions draw Sri Lanka in a Test Series
On day three of the four-day match in Galle, Surrey batsman Smith surpassed Luke Wright’s 91-ball century against New Zealand in 2008/09 by scoring the quickest century by an England Lions batsman. Tongue, a seamer for Worcestershire, finished with a match total of 8-153 after scoring 5-76 in Sri Lanka A’s first innings and 3-77 in their second.
After Sri Lanka A was dismissed for 356 runs, Jack Carson of Sussex took 4-94, and the Lions’ second innings ended with a score of 173-7. A three-match one-day series between England Lions and Sri Lanka will be played in Colombo on February 15, 18, and 21.
Tom Abell of Somerset will lead the Lions in the white-ball matches. Abell has been called up to the senior England team for the upcoming one-day and T20I series in Bangladesh. Tom Banton, a teammate of Abell’s from Somerset, will miss the matches after hurting his finger playing in the International League T20 in the UAE. He will be evaluated when he gets back to England. Jack Haynes of Worcestershire has taken Banton’s position in the Lions team.
